From sister Carol in Wales

>>>Just how many lambs are you expecting?????

How many? We don't know and can't tell.

Between 2 and 12, depending on how many of them are really pregnant and how many give birth to twins and triplets. We can't tell how many are bred right now. It's looking likely that our two senior ewes decided to take a year off, although we saw them "at it" late in the year so they may surprise us. They'll have to get fat soon, though, if they are bred. One two year old is very, very visibly preggas, quite huge, and will likely pop out one or two or even three really soon, another two year old is looking sort of fatter than usual when she lies down. If Lark, our stunted, autistic three year old ever gets bred she'll blow our minds. So we have between 1 and 4 more pregant sheep.

Quadruplets also occasionally occur. So the most we could possibly, theoretically, have is 16. Very unlikely. We've never had even triplets. My bet is on three more pregant yows, each having between 1 and 2, so say 4 or 5 more lambs. Gestation period is 145 days plus or minus 5 or so, and the last nuptuals (that we observed) were in November, so go figure.

(There are maths problems as well as vocabulary.)

Welcome to our Farm Blog.
The purpose of this blog is for Aimee and I to communicate with friends and family, with those of our students, and other folks in general who are interested in homesteading and farming activities.

The earliest posts, at the very end of the blog, tell the story of the Great Farm, our purchase of a fragment of that farm, the renovation of the homestead and its populating with people and animals. Go all the way to the last post in the archive and read backwards from there to get it in chronological order.

After getting tired of spam comments (up to a dozen or more per day), I required commentators to be Google "registered users". You can write me at mwomersley@unity.edu if you have a serious comment or question and are not a registered user.

Spammers -- don't bother writing -- there's no way I will post your spam to my blog. Just go away.
